About

TIER 1 APPROVED

EPISCISSORS-60™ are patented, fixed angle scissors which take away human error in estimating episiotomy angles during childbirth. The innovation by Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Bournemouth, Dharmesh Kapoor, reduces the risk of complications associated with standard practice episiotomies which can cause obstetric anal sphincter muscle injuries, and have a devastating impact on the quality of a new mother’s life.

Designed to guide an accurate mediolateral episiotomy at 60 degrees to the perineal midline,EPISCISSORS-60™ provide an alternative to standard episiotomy scissors, for which the cutting angle must be estimated. They can be used in secondary care midwifery and obstetric units, primary care midwifery units or birth centres, and during home births. Both straight and angled versions are available.

EPISCISSORS-60™ have been shown to reduce OASIS (Obstetric anal sphincter injuries) by nearly 20% in a two-centre UK study. Endorsed by NICE as the only CE marked device for guided episiotomy, EPISCISSORS-60™ have been selected for NHS England’s National Innovation Accelerator (NIA) programme to diffuse innovations for patient benefit.
