Winning hydration initiative

Posted on 25th April, 2016

A pioneering hydration programme at Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust shortlisted in the 2015 Health Service Journal Awards has been rolled out throughout the hospitals.

Initiated by Janet Green, an acute nurse practitioner, the ‘hello my name is…would you like a drink?’ campaign is designed to ensure patients are constantly hydrated in hospital by encouraging staff to always be asking if a patient needs water and ensuring it is in easy reach for them.

Adopted by staff across the hospitals, the campaign highlights the importance of compassionate care, hydration and accurate recording of fluid balance. Through providing assistance to ward staff when a patient is deteriorating, Janet Green realised that fluid balance charts were an area of concern – essential for identifying dehydration and preventing acute kidney injury. The initiative uses the existing national ‘Hello my name is’ campaign - designed to ensure health professional introduce themselves to patients - and simply adds ‘would you like a drink?’

The initiative was shortlisted as a finalist in the HSJ Awards 2015 in the 'Compassionate Patient Care' category.
