Xploro

By Dom Raban, Xploro Added 1st August, 2019

Xploro® is a clinically validated Digital Therapeutics (DTx) application that uses augmented reality, gameplay and artificial intelligence to deliver health information to young patients, reducing the stress and anxiety associated with hospitalisation, improving health literacy and fostering better engagement with health services.

We’re starting with children with cancer, but we’re aiming to build a health information platform for any patient, of any age, with any condition, anywhere in the world.

About

Xploro® consists of a mobile application for patients, a web application for parents and a management portal for clinicians.

The Xploro® app uses 3D augmented reality interactive models, an artificially intelligent Avatar Guide and a series of games to introduce patients to hospital environments, staff and process.

Our patent-pending Avatar Guide is a unique conversational agent (chatbot), designed specifically with the needs of children in mind. The chatbot uses synthetic phonics to understand text input from populations with low literacy levels. This is particularly relevant to children where spelling ability may be low – especially with complex medical terms. The Guide can engage in conversation and retain knowledge from previous interactions with the patient. Sentiment analysis allows the Guide to interpret and record the patient’s mood and report this back to the management portal.

The management portal and parent app allows clinicians and parents/carers to manage content within the app. Hospital admins can manage subscriptions and premium add-ons. A comprehensive analytics dashboard shows how patients are using the app and allows clinicians to track mood against care pathways.

A six-month research study at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital involving 80 children showed that those children who used Xploro® demonstrated a significant reduction in procedural anxiety as well as significant increases in knowledge about procedures and patient satisfaction.
