Monica Spiteri

Co-Founder & Chief Operating Officer; Respiratory Physician

Professor Monica Spiteri is Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of NEPESMO Ltd, a start-up from her research at the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) where she is a consultant respiratory physician and Director of Respiratory Research. Monica completed her medical studies at St Thomas' Hospital London and respiratory specialist training and PhD studies at the Royal Brompton Hospital and Royal Free Hospital, London. She moved to UHNM and Keele University in 1992 to set up an academic infrastructure, establishing an international track record in laboratory-based and translational research in interstitial lung disease and chronic airway inflammation. Working with patients, she has designed, developed and patented products that will enable patients with respiratory chronic conditions to self-manage effectively and predict onset of exacerbations. Innovations include AI-driven digital solutions and saliva biomarker diagnostics. Achievement awards include West Midlands NHS Innovation High Commendation for ‘COPDPredict™ - a smart bioclinical approach to personalised COPD self-management’ and Highly Commended Knowledge Transfer Champion, West Midlands. High profile roles include external advisor and evaluator to European Commission Horizon 2020 Personalising Healthcare programme, Chair of the British Thoracic Society Lung Registry and executive roles on the British Lung Foundation, European Respiratory Society and American Thoracic Society. She has been advisor to various pharmaceutical companies.
